ISTA Working Programme 2007 - 2010

This document presents the approved Working Programme and Membership of the ISTA Technical Committees (TCOMs) 2007 - 2010. Working programmes are developed by the committees for the three year period between two ISTA Congresses and are approved by the ISTA Executive Committee.

ISTA Seed Mixture Experiment

The current ISTA Rules do not cover seed mixtures and the issuance of ISTA Certificates is limited to lots of one variety or species. The ISTA Bulking and Sampling, Purity and Germination Committees in conjunction with the Statistics Committee were requested by the ISTA Executive Committee to establish sampling and testing rules for mixtures.

Mixture seed lots are expected to be more heterogeneous than seed lots of one variety/species of seed. This is assumed in particular to be true for chaffy herbage seed mixtures and mixtures of flower or wild species with a high number of components of very different seed flowing properties. However, we do not know by how far the variation in mixture lots exceeds the variation presently accepted by the ISTA Rules. Because the answer to this question will not only affect the representativeness of the submitted sample for the average quality of the lot, but also the representativeness of the test results for an individual container in the lot, it is necessary to attain experience and to collect data on this key aspect.

ISTA is initiating an experiment to collect information that may be used to determine the reliability of seed mixture test results and establish tolerances. Any accredited ISTA laboratory can take part in this experiment.  Laboratories taking part in the experiment should follow the protocol given in: Technical protocol for the ISTA Experiment on Sampling and Testing Seed Mixtures and they are should submit the data obtained to the ISTA Secretariat on the  ISTA Experiment for sampling and testing seed mixtures: Report Form.

Although data from germination and other seed determination tests on mixtures is not required for analysis, procedures for these tests are given in the protocol for the guidance of those who test mixtures for these quality attributes.

Since the representativeness of the samples of mixtures is unknown, ISTA Certificates cannot be issued and the issue of ISTA Certificates is not included as part of this experiment.

To register for participation in the experiment or to obtain further information or clarification, please contact the ISTA Secretariat at tcom(at)ista.ch.
